The Peace Palace is the most photographed building in The Hague. It is home to the International Court of Justice, the united nations' only judicial body outside New York, and the Permanent Court of Arbitration.
Next to the entrance to the Peace Palace stands the Eternal Flame of Peace. On the monument is the inscription: "May all beings find peace". Since 2004, the monument has been surrounded by the World Peace Path, consisting of an edge of 196 stones and stones from 196 countries. Some stones are special: for example, there is a chunk of stone from the Berlin Wall and a stone from robben island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for years.
The Visitors Centre of the Peace Palace is open from Tuesday to Sunday. In the summer months, the opening hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. During the winter period (from November to March 22) there are adjusted opening hours. The Peace Palace itself is specially open to the public on some days in the summer and around the turn of the year. A tour of the Large and Small Courtroom, the galleries and the Japanese Hall gives you an impression of the most beautiful spaces in the building.
This world-famous location is within walking distance of our B&B. Check the Peace Palace website for available times.

"Strand"
The well-maintained, white sandy beach of The Hague is 3 kilometres long and runs from Kijkduin to Scheveningen. The boulevards offer a cosy place to stroll with numerous attractions, fun eateries and shops, festivals, cultural events, markets and concerts. Striking landmarks are the artwork Hemels Gewelf in Kijkduin, the monument De Vissersvrouw at the meeting of the Keizerstraat and the sympathetic sculptures of Fairy Statues by the Sea. Most striking is the gigantic Haringeter who has become the icon of the new Scheveningen boulevard.
On the kilometre-long promenade of Scheveningen there are plenty of nice restaurants and beach tents with a nice view of the sea and the famous Pier of Scheveningen. The beach tents are open from March to early October. Some beach pavilions are open all year round.
On the beach and through the dunes you can walk. The dunes are also particularly suitable for long bike rides. You can also enjoy other sports such as kite surfing on the beach of The Hague.
In the immediate vicinity of the beach there is a lot to do all year-only for young and old. The promenade is surrounded by all kinds of attractions such as De Pier, sea aquarium Sea Life, shopping centre Palace Promenade, Holland Casino, Pathé cinema and the Circustheater.
The beaches of The Hague are easily accessible by public transport and also by bike only a quarter of an hour away from B&B Valkenbos.

"Heavenly
In the dunes of The Hague, where land and sea touch each other, you will find a special work of art. The American artist James Turrell has created a protected bowl to look at the sky in a special way. The 'Heavenly Vault' is shaped like an ellipse and is thirty metres wide and forty metres long. The surrounding dune of five meters high is sown with grass. Through a concrete passage, the visitor enters the artificial crater.
In the middle is a monumental bank of natural stone on which two people can lie back. In the dune bowl, the light room seems to curve and the sky forms a vault, which you can look at endlessly. On a higher dune stands the same bench where a panorama unfolds over the sea, the beach and the flat land behind it.
This particular landscape artwork is based on the actual light that generates experiences in the individual viewer that transcend the purely sensory. The Dutch light is made visible by Turrell in a special way and it has an emotional and spiritual impact.
From the dune top you have a fantastic panoramic view. From B&B Valkenbos you can easily get there, by bike, by car or even walking. Going to see that and especially experience it!

"Mauritshuis"
The Mauritshuis shows the best of Dutch painting from the Golden Age. In the heart of The Hague is the world-famous collection. Masterpieces such as Vermeer's Girl with the Pearl, The Anatomical Lesson of Dr. Rembrandt's Nicolaes Tulp, Fabritius's tonertje and Potter's bull are on permanent display in the intimate museum halls of the seventeenth-century monument.
More than two hundred masterpieces by Dutch and Flemish masters have their place in the classic interior, which exudes a pleasant atmosphere due to its silk wall covering, sparkling chandeliers and monumental ceiling paintings. Interiors by Jan Steen, landscapes by Ruysdael, still lifes by Coorte and portraits of Rubens give a rich and varied picture of painting from the seventeenth century.
The Mauritshuis also houses the painting 'Vase with flowers' by Jan Davidsz de Heem that B&B Valkenbos has used for the wallpaper of the Flora room.
